The purpose of the Knife Chief Buffalo Nation Society is to provide educational, cultural, and spiritual knowledge. We promote and support activities and programs for the health, strength, and well-being of the community and future generations. Our grassroots project works to restore buffalo, Lakota culture and lifeways.
Our Work
Our herd is located near Porcupine, South Dakota on Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. We have managed the buffalo herd and have been informally doing these activities for several years. The buffalo that are in our care are used as sustenance as well as for ceremonial and spiritual purposes. Our goal is to restore a respectful and spiritual relationship that we once had with the Buffalo Nation so that our future generations can continue the ceremonies that make us strong.
"Having the Buffalo back amongst us gives the people strength- both physical and spiritual. They were our food, clothing and shelter for many generations, for thousands of years. The meat is healthy and when we harvest an animal, we do it with prayer. The meat is blessed. So when the people eat it, they receive blessings and strength."
